The lead hole, as it is called, is home to an excellent stock of predatory fish. Large pike, zander, perch and catfish feel at home here. However, the most coveted fish are the predatory fish. However, bank anglers have it very difficult, as many parts of the bank are not accessible at all or only with great difficulty. Boat anglers have an advantage here. It is therefore advisable to rent a boat from the local boat rental companies. You can also use this to get your fishing gear to a place to sit that you can't reach by car or on foot.
However, it should be noted that trolling is prohibited throughout the dam. When boat fishing, the boat must be anchored. There are also often questions about the bait fish. Fishing with live bait fish is prohibited. Further provisions can be found in the permits, further information can be found here.
Fly fishermen get their money's worth in the Burgkhammer reservoir and the Walsburg dam. Both are salmonid wLakes where fishing is only permitted with fly rods or spinning rods.
Although coarse fish anglers also get their money's worth on this lake, the Hohenwarte dam is widely regarded as excellent water for predatory fish. And rightly so. Under normal conditions, the 7.3 square kilometer and 27 kilometer long body of water has a visual depth of six to seven meters in the dam area. The pike find particularly good living conditions. Fish up to about 120 centimeters in length are caught relatively frequently.
Although some bays are occupied by campsites, you can also fish well from the shore on the Zopte, in the Lothrabucht, in the Große Selze, on the Drachenschwanz and in the Otterbucht. The dragon's tail is particularly recommended for tracking the spotted predators. In spring, the pike are close to the spawning grounds, for example on the flooded meadows at Mühlgraben near Ziegenrück. In principle, however, boat anglers also have an advantage at the Hohenwarte dam.
Unfortunately, trolling is forbidden all year round, making it difficult to catch the large open-water pike. Because the giants often change their stand, you have to look for them. All the fish in the Hohenwarte dam have a very good meat quality, because the subsoil consists mostly of rubble. There is little mud and almost no weed.
Fishing with a hand rod is possible on several water bodies in the pond area. A valid fishing license is required. You can find out where to get a fishing license (fishing card) from the regulatory office of the administrative community
