The Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale Nature Park is as diverse as its name. From the land of blue gold in the west to the Saale reservoirs in the middle, the Rennsteig and the Green Belt in the south to the Plothen ponds in the east, there is plenty to discover.

The slate, Thuringia's blue gold, has decisively shaped this landscape and the towns. The small towns with the unmistakable slate roofs and facades are real gems. in the technical monument "historical slate construction" and the Foundry "Heinrichshuette" you can still admire the regional handicrafts today or on the slate path hike the region.

The Plothen ponds extend over more than 100 hectares in the north-east of the nature park. Created long ago by monks, there are still 550 ponds that are fed solely by rainwater. The largest, the Plothener Hausteich, is home to the unique stilt house, which today serves as an information center for the region. Every year in October, the land of a thousand ponds becomes the venue for cultural, culinary and nature-related offers during the Fish and Game Weeks.

Cities & Municipalities

The Saale-Orla district is mostly in the Thuringian Slate Mountains or in its transitional areas to the Thuringian Holzland and the Vogtland. As a result, the terrain has a clear low mountain range character, more than 80% of the area of the district is over 400 m high. The lowest point is the Orlatal with a height of approx. 180 m above sea level. NN in the municipality of Langenorla. At 733 m, the Sieglitzberg near Bad Lobenstein near the Bavarian border is the highest point in the district. The highest place is Rodacherbrunn at about 700 m altitude.
